On reduction in force

Today I was laid off because of a reduction in force at my company. I am not really upset about losing a job; I can get another one. No, what upsets me is losing that particular job. I enjoyed working there; it was a good company, good people, and very cool products.

However, this is an excellent opportunity to do something else exciting, find another good job, maybe move somewhere interesting, and work on a new and interesting product.

I am sure the company had trouble with an interesting but troubling dilemma: how to reduce costs without sacrificing the ability to produce the products the company needs to make sales. I am not sure if reducing their development force was really the best idea; who will build the new products and features they need to make sales?

I wish them best of luck in their endeavors, and hope things go well for them. As for me,  it is time to, in the words of Mark Twain, “…throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.”
